On Sept. 14, also known as National Field Hockey Day, spectators were given the gift of a top-20 matchup, and that matchup did not disappoint. The No. 17 Ithaca College Field Hockey team took down the No. 9 team in Division III, York College, with just one lethal penalty corner to start the game — and end it — at 1-0.

The Range, a beloved bar located on the Ithaca Commons, closed its doors for good Aug. 3, 2024. The bar was first opened in 2016 by owners Andrew Schreck and Tommy Grozier. The Range was both a bar and a music venue that hosted a variety of themed nights, including “ThursGays” on Thursdays and Salsa nights on Wednesdays. On “ThursGays,” the Range would host a variety of weekly queer events with local drag performers. On salsa nights, anyone was able to come and learn to salsa dance and listen to Latin music. The Range also showcased local Ithaca bands and DJs weekly.
The Ithaca College Contingent Faculty Union, which represents faculty in part-time positions and full-time contingent, ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the college in July.

As Cornell University students traveled to Collegetown for the start of Fall 2024, many Cornell staff members headed to the picket lines. The UAW Local 2300 strike and Cornell graduate students’ unionization in Fall 2023 are recent instances of union negotiations or unionization in higher education that have captured national attention.
A U.S. district judge ruled that a former student’s claims against Ithaca College for violating Title IX and about Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress against Bryan Roberts, former associate dean of the Roy. H Park School of Communications, will survive. This means that the claims will be further pursued in court.

In a decision and order filed Sept. 10, a U.S. district judge ruled that a former student’s claim against Ithaca College for violating Title IX will survive. The student’s claim about Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress against Bryan Roberts, former associate dean of the Roy. H Park School of Communications, will also survive. This means that the claims will be further pursued in court.

For over 20 years, Andrew Smith, Dana professor in the Department of Biology at Ithaca College, has been researching the Arion subfuscus , an invasive species of slug originally from Northwest Europe that is now commonly found in Ithaca and across most of Eastern North America. His research has been featured as the cover article of issue 24 of the scientific journal Soft Matter.

The Ithaca College women’s soccer team faced off against the No. 24 SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. The game was energetic, with both sides showcasing impressive offensive and defensive maneuvers while the fans watched with bated breath. Graduate student midfielder Sarah Sinnott scored twice in a 2-0 win for the Bombers.
Trees Up Tompkins teamed up with Ithaca College to plant many types of trees behind Emerson Hall. The event featured an informational and cultural  Gayogo̱hó:nǫ nation ceremony.
Ithaca College sprouts renewal of native agriculture and cultural roots

On Sept. 8, Ithaca College staff and students collaborated with Trees Up Tompkins to plant native trees on campus behind Emerson Hall. Trees Up Tompkins is a community group devoted to the renewal of Ithaca’s native trees to help draw carbon down from the atmosphere and improve the environment.

With the closing of The Range in downtown Ithaca, many patrons of the beloved ThursGays events were concerned about the survival of what has become a pinnacle of the LGBTQ+ community in the area. In 2024, there are few designated spaces for social events that cater to  LGBTQ+ clientele in upstate New York. ThursGays has since moved to Lot 10.
